JoBlo Movie Podcast: The Top Gun Commentary!

What better way to celebrate Valentime's Month (it's a month now, right?) than to listen to The JoBlo Movie Podcast commentary for Top Gun! I mean, it's like a love story, right? We ponder a variety of ridiculous topics, such as: does the Air Force have a height requirement? Because Principal Strickland is short as fuck. Why doesn't Goose take his shirt off? Why do we WANT him to take his shirt off? And did you know Tim Robbins is up in this bitch? We're skeptical, since he has a helmet on the whole time. Come for the volleyball scene (heh, no really), stay for a drunken, nonsensical dissection of Tony Scott's 80s classic!

There's also some interest in 'The King of The Nerds' (only because Lewis and Booger are involved) and continued support of 'Justified' and 'The Americans'. Law tries not to be intellectually bullied by THE MASTER and ends up finding his favorite performance of 2012. From there the boys take a look at New Releases and try to figure out who is excited for a new DIE HARD movie (it's not us or Bruce Willis) and, thanks to another voicemail, Law gets to make his case as to why the first STAR WARS spin-off movie should be about Boba Fett. Yoda, it shouldn't be.

JoBlo Movie Podcast: The Grey Commentary!

The JoBlo Movie Podcast returns with another commentary, this time for the movie that topped Moreno's best of 2012 list and made it to number 3 on Jim Law's (really 15 but whatevs), Joe Carnahan's THE GREY. The boys discuss what it'd be like to be stranded in the Alaskan wilderness (they'd kill themselves on the plane), the criticism it received for how the wolves behaved (when's the last time you hung out with a wolf, bitch?), and how THE GREY can be an all out dude movie with dude emotions without dumbing everyone down (except if you listen to this commentary). Which characters would Moreno and Law be in the movie? We describe the movie as very moody, but what the f*ck does that even mean? Does it cut itself? Come for the drunken commentary, stay for some of Moreno's douchey high school poetry. For real.

When CBum goes to bed, Moreno and Law bring back the Drunk Segment which has the boys discussing one of the stupider moments of GANGSTER SQUAD in a 40s piano bar. What We Watched delivers reviews of SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, THE LAST STAND, THIS IS 40, and Moreno's drunk WILLY WONKA sing-a-long. Listener voicemail treats us to a review of MAMA, another suggestion for Movie Jail, why Seth Macfarlane isn't gay, and the boys most anticipated film of 2013. New Releases, jibber-jabber, a couple more beers, and we're out.

JoBlo Movie Podcast: Oscar Noms Talk, Reviews of Gangster Squad, Zero Dark, & John Dies at the End!

Law and Moreno kick things off with a discussion of the Oscar nominations and the fact that they haven't seen anything that matters to the Academy. Losers. They did, however, check out a bunch of stuff for your listening pleasure. Reviews come fast and furious as they take shots at GANGSTER SQUAD, ZERO DARK THIRTY, JOHN DIES AT THE END, FRANKENWEENIE, HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA, and PREMIUM RUSH. From there the boys contemplate Hollywood's most overrated actresses, get some updates on the thriving success of Movie Jail, and take a look at what's coming out this week in New Releases. Otherwise it's pretty tight. Moreno then goes on to review THE HOBBIT while Law sits down with FLIGHT. Some New Releases, a couple burps and we're out. Welcome to the new 2013 JoBlo Movie Podcast. Our resolution was to quit drinking. Things didn't work out.

JoBlo Movie Podcast: The Avengers Commentary!

The JoBlo Movie Podcast rings in 2013 (F the Mayans) with a commentary for the highly anticipated and biggest grossing movie of 2012, Marvel's The Avengers. How does so much goodness get packed into one movie? How does Thor keep the balance of body and weight in his enviable hair? Is Scarlett Johannson going to take her shirt off or what? There's talk of which superhero we wanted to be when we grew up (and now), why the aliens at the end look like Orcs (not really), and how the "one shot" at the end could be one of the best sequences of the year.

JoBlo Movie Podcast: Jimmy O vs. Chris Bumbray in the Battle of the Best Films of the Year!

Jimmy O and Chris Bumbray have been the leading film reviewers for JoBlo.com for years. They consider themselves friends and great colleagues but have never had the opportunity to actually sit down and speak to each other about movies. Now they have. Moreno and Law take a open the floor to the two Podcast regulars as they each give us the run-down on their own Top Ten Lists from 2012. There's yelling, there's cursing, there's bromance, and there sure as hell is a lot of secret piss breaks for Law and Moreno. Keep talking boys. Come join us for our end of the year celebration with two of our favorite guests, a few dozen beers, and more LES MISERABLES talk than you ever thought you could sit through. I left a couple times. Stay tuned later this week for our AVENGERS Commentary and stupid tweets @TheJoBloPodcast. Happy New Year, yo.

Sometimes shows are just epic. Law and Moreno are joined by the great Eric Walkuski as he delivers his thoughts on THE HOBBIT, DJANGO UNCHAINED, and ZERO DARK THIRTY. Then 'The Wire' alum, Pablo Schreiber stops by to talk about his new film, ALLEGIANCE, audio books, and yes, The Wire. If that's not enough for you we get one of the smoothest men on the planet, Common, to join us to chat about his latest film, LUV. From there, what's left of the boys deliver their own reviews of CLOUD ATLAS (the greatest Johnny Moreno review ever), PUNCTURE, THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, SLEEPWALK WITH ME, and BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD. Still not enough? How about a voicemail from Steven Seagal's mom (note: we are unclear on whether or not this is Steven Seagal's mom) scolding Jim Law on his interviwing capabilities and the raising of his children. We'll even throw in a hate filled voicemail review of THE BOURNE LEGACY, some minor TV Round-Up as we wait for the end of Homeland, and the highs and lows of Decembeard. Be sure to check out our pod-crash on the AITH show this Wednesday. Our children are ashamed of us.

JoBlo Movie Podcast: The first 9 minutes of Star Trek Into Darkness seen! Season finale round up! Voicemail Roll Call!

Better late than never, that's what my grandfather used to say. But he was late for his own funeral, so what the flying fuck did he know anyway? Moreno gives Law the week off so he could shove more beer in his face area, then goes solo on the epic season finale round up of Boardwalk Empire, Sons of Anarchy, and The Walking Dead. From there, the great Jimmy O stops by to talk about seeing the first 9 minutes of STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS and the boys get into a heated debate on the merits of Expendables 2 (there are none). New Releases and a voicemail roll call leaves us with questions on where Homeland is headed and why Killing Them Softly sucks so hard.

JoBlo Movie Podcast: Killing Them Softly, Premium Rush & Sinister Reviewed! What We Don't Want in the New Star Wars Movies!

Law and Moreno start things off with some serious discussion about the future of superhero movies. Why would JGL be Batman? What other characters have to come back for the new X-MEN movie? From there Moreno visits the theater for KILLING THEM SOFTLY and re-visits JACKIE BROWN & BEVERLY HILLS COP. Both boys review SINISTER and the creepy creeps that came along with it. Law goes on to check out PREMIUM RUSH and HIT AND RUN. A great voicemail question leads to a discussion about what the guys don't want in the new STAR WARS movies. From there it's all New Releases and drunken slurs. Enjoy.

JoBlo Movie Podcast: They Live Commentary!

What better way to come down from the presidential election blues than by watching John Carpenter's look at shadow governments, sedation and obedience by consumerism, and Keith David in Lakers' colors. It's the 1987 cult classic THEY LIVE and we break this puppy down like Roddy Piper with a pickaxe. Seriously Roddy, why you gotta be all buff and manly and shit? Drink with us as we try to figure out if that old guy is "Red" from BACK TO THE FUTURED. Marvel as WE marvel at the broad with the creepiest eyes of all time. Seriously, is she about to turn into the Hulk or is she "one of them"? The movie starts as one thing, then someone zips through space on their watch. Gotta get me one of them shits.

JoBlo Movie Podcast: Reviews of Butter, Silent Night! Another Look at Spider-Man and Expendables 2! Epic TV Round-Up!

Other students among the pro-Palestinian demonstrators in the heart of the New York campus were sceptical about invoking the Arabic call for an uprising because it has been so widely used by pro-Israeli groups to discredit their cause as support for terrorism and therefore antisemitic.

Did Darvin Ham cost LeBron James his last real chance at another NBA title?

The even-keeled Michigan native, who was sacked as the Lakersa head coach on Friday, was hired for his ability to manage personalities. Once he lost his playersa trust, it was only a matter of a

The date is 31 January, less than two months removed from the Los Angeles Lakersa inaugural NBA Cup championship, and the Lakers are nosediving precipitously, racking up loss after loss in late December and into January. In a competitive Western Conference, being sub-.500, even by a game or two, simply will not get the job done for a championship hopeful. And the team does have a right to be among those hopefuls, buoyed by a shockingly healthy tandem of a freshly-39-year-old LeBron James and injury-prone big man Anthony Davis, who, to this point, have missed a combined eight games and are playing at an All-NBA level. But something clearly isnat working, and time is of the essence. No one knows this better than foe of father time himself, LeBron: that night, after yet another demoralizing loss, he tweets out, simply, an hourglass. A single emoji has never loomed larger.

At the time, there is frantic speculation in regards to what, or to whom, the primitive timepiece is referring. Is it Jamesa underperforming supporting cast, with the trade deadline hovering in the immediate future? Is it the Lakersa front office, who are no doubt aware of his player option looming in the coming offseason? Is it his own NBA mortality, to which he has admitted he will likely succumb sooner rather than later, despite no significant drop-off in production?

aItas like winning the lotterya: the mobile home owners buying the land they live on

Residents of manufactured housing parks typically own their homes a but not the parks themselves, which can be incredibly lucrative. Now some residents are forming cooperatives, and taking control

Bev Adrian, a retired career placement counselor for people with disabilities, lives in Woodlawn Terrace, a mobile home park just outside Minneapolis, Minnesota. The nearby streets are full of bustling local businesses a a Sota Boys Smoke Shop, a Pump N Munch Gas a but Woodlawn is a quiet park tucked away under maples and pines.

Adrian moved there four years ago, coincidentally right as Woodlawnas owner was looking to sell. Woodlawnas landlord was well liked, but for years the parkas residents had been hearing rumors about possible sales to much less friendly owners.

Tarot review a disappointment is in the cards with silly supernatural horror

Final Destination inspires yet another throwaway teen schlocker, this time with an increasingly risible astrological bent

As many of us impatiently wait for the sixth Final Destination film, slated for release next year over a decade since the fifth, here comes yet another limp attempt to recreate that specific, sadistic form of magic. Some curse, some teens, some shock deaths, a formula thatas been trotted out in so-what films like Wish Upon, Countdown and Truth or Dare, shrugs where shocks should be, franchise starters ending after the first round.

Which brings us to Tarot, a film wisely kept from critics until the very last second and one that audiences would be smart to keep themselves from too. Itas not quite as bad as these things can often be but flashes of competence are not enough to distract from a sense of crushing pointlessness, more watery slop served up lukewarm for undemanding Friday night horror fans, who really ought to be demanding so much more.

Experience: Iave eaten pizza every day for six years

Iave tried peanut butter and bacon pizza, and had a caviar one, too

There is nothing I like more in this world than pizza. I grew up in the early 90s in Connecticut, where my dad owned a pizzeria called Kenny Vas until I was three. I still have his old restaurant sign in my garage.

For the last six years, Iave eaten pizza every single day. Sometimes it might just be a slice, but most days I will get through a whole one. My favourite is a classic American deep-pan pepperoni. I also love tomato and cheese on a nice thick crust, so a plain margherita will never go amiss.

Dua Lipa: Radical Optimism review a apsychedelic pop-infuseda? Pull the other one!

(Warner Records)
The British superstar has said her new album is influenced by Britpop, rave culture and Primal Scream, but you could go mad trying to find the evidence

Earlier this year, Dua Lipa gave a lengthy magazine interview, the first salvo on the promotional trail for her third album. It wasnat very interesting a sheas smart enough to keep her private life and her opinions on anything contentious to herself in a world of over-sharing and constantly simmering online outrage a but there was one surprising detail. She said the album was aa psychedelic pop-infused tribute to UK rave culturea, influenced by Primal Scream, Massive Attack and the adonat give a fuck-nessa of Oasis and Blur.

That all sounds intriguing. It would clearly be a dramatic departure from the disco-house sound of 2020as Future Nostalgia, while feeling curiously of the moment: all those artists reached their peak three decades ago, and 90s revivalism appears to be having a moment. A hankering after the eraas pre-9/11 optimism and pre-smartphone straightforwardness has meant Britpop references suddenly seem to be everywhere, as a recent feature in this newspaper noted. Perhaps, by delving into some corners of the 90s where mainstream 2024 pop seldom goes, Dua Lipa has made an album as inadvertently zeitgeisty as its predecessor which rocketed her into popas superleague by providing a soundtrack to lockdown-era kitchen discos.

The not-so-secret cost of being superhuman: elite sportas problem with disordered eating

And, as professionalism has increased, so too has the optimisation of athletesa bodies in the quest for peak human condition.

aItas about valuing their audiencea: why Ghostbusters called in a Muslim acultural consultanta

The spooky comedy franchise may seem an unlikely place to find an ethnicity and faith adviser, but productions are increasingly aware of a duty to make sure communities are truthfully represented

The asensitivity readera is a well-established, if controversial, figure in the publishing world, offering advice on whether a bookas content might cause offence. The film and TV industry has also been forced to confront similar issues, with aintimacy coordinatorsa now widely employed to ensure that filmed sex scenes neither harm the actors nor outrage audiences. Perhaps less well-known, but now gaining ground in film and TV, is the role of a acultural consultanta a advisers taken on by productions to help them navigate the choppy waters of sensitivities around ethnicity and faith.

Sajid Varda, founder and CEO of media charity UK Muslim Film and director of the UKas inaugural Muslim international film festival, recently completed an assignment on Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the latest instalment of the popular and long-running series of supernatural comedies. Varda says the key to such roles is aauthenticitya; it is, he says anot just saying what is wrong with this, but how can we make it better and improve it?a

Let us remember the last time students occupied Columbia University | Omar Barghouti, Tanaquil Jones, and Barbara Ransby

In 1985, Columbia students occupied campus to push for divestment from South Africa. Five months later, the university cut ties to the apartheid regime after years of dragging its feet

As three former 1980s student leaders at Columbia University, we applaud the courage and conviction of Palestine solidarity student activists in the eye of the storm. Despite the recent arrest of more than 100 protesters, they insist: aDisclose! Divest! We will not stop, we will not rest!a

We defend their right to protest and affirm the righteousness of their demands: an end to Israelas genocidal war against 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza and to the complicity of the US government and institutions in its apartheid and ethnic cleansing. The international court of justiceas recent ruling that Israel is plausibly committing genocide against 2.3 million Palestinians makes divestment a legal, not just ethical, obligation.

Floridaas abortion ban has brought fear and chaos. This is the rightas vision for the US | Moira Donegan

The scenes in Florida of frantic and overcrowded clinics are a grim preview of the future that apro-lifersa want for women

A Womanas Choice, an abortion clinic in Jacksonville, usually sees somewhere between 10 and 15 patients a day. But last week, they extended their hours. On Monday, they scheduled somewhere between 70 and 80 patients, according to the Washington Post. The president of one reproductive health center spoke of warning her incoming patients about the scenes they would encounter at Floridaas abortion clinics. aWeare telling them, aHey, itas going to be busy,aa said Kelly Flynn.

For some, a deadline loomed after an anxious period of trying to scrape together the funding for the care they need: one doctor recalled calling patients who had delayed their appointments a in most cases because they hadnat been able to secure enough money for the procedure yet a and reminding them that they donat have much more time. For other women, a sudden realization led to a last-minute scramble. aOne patient this morning told me that she had just gone for a regular doctoras appointment last week and found out she was pregnant,a a clinician told the Florida news radio station WOKV.
